How to Pick Wall Art That's the Right Size for Your Space: A Complete Guide

By Amy Wright | Jan 17, 2018

When it comes to wall art, size matters. A canvas or framed print can be the statement piece your room was missing, but if the size isn't right, something will feel off. Too small, and your room looks incomplete. Too big, and the room feels crowded. This guide covers everything you need to pick wall art that's the right size for your space.

Read the room first

Before you commit to a size, gauge how a piece will actually look in your space. Outline a few potential dimensions on the wall with painter's tape, sticky notes, or paper, then step back and take it in. Snap a photo on your phone while you're at it, it's easier to judge a mock-up in a picture than in person. Try a large square canvas print against a wide panoramic canvas and compare until you find your favorite.

The general sizing rules

A little math goes a long way here, and two rules will get you most of the way to the right size:

  1. Wall art should take up 60% to 75% of the available wall space (the space not covered by furniture or moldings). Measure the width and height of your wall, then multiply both by 0.60 and 0.75 to get your ideal range. A wall that's 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide, for example, works best with a print between 5.4 and 6.75 feet tall and 3 to 3.75 feet wide.
  2. Over furniture, aim for 2/3 to 3/4 of the furniture's width. A 6-foot couch pairs well with a canvas between 3.6 and 4.5 feet wide.

Keep the orientation of your photo in mind too. A portrait shot tends to suit a narrower wall, while a landscape shot fits nicely above a sofa or bed.

Where you're hanging it changes the math

The room and placement matter as much as the wall itself. A large piece works best above a couch, bed, or fireplace, where there's room for it to breathe. A smaller print can get lost on an empty wall but feels right on a shelf, a hallway, or a desk. If you're working with a gallery wall or other art nearby, keep pieces close in size so nothing gets visually lost in the mix, and if you want one photo to stand out, print it slightly larger and place it at the center.

When standard sizes don't fit, go custom

Most print companies only offer a handful of fixed sizes. CanvasPop's custom sizing starts at 8 inches and goes all the way up to 72 inches, in both width and height, so you're never stuck picking "the size the machine can do." Select "custom size" at checkout, enter your preferred dimensions, and preview exactly how it will look before you order. Want more than one panel? A triptych print splits a single image across three canvases for a bold, multi-panel look, and can be customized in size or panel count.

Go big when in doubt

A small canvas can't fill a big space, but a big canvas creates an instant focal point. If you're torn between two sizes, size up. Got a few smaller pieces you love? Group them into a gallery wall instead of hanging them solo.

Hang it at the right height

The height you hang at matters just as much as the size. As a rule of thumb, the center of your canvas should sit at eye level. If it's going above furniture, leave 6 to 12 inches of breathing room above the top of the piece.

Whatever the wall, CanvasPop offers sizes from small accents to large statement pieces, plus custom dimensions for anything in between. Measure your space, pick your favorite photo, and create a print that's made to fit.
